TV time

I was thinking how plain my blog looks without any photos, so thought I'd upload a recent pic of my daughter (on the left) and her friend (who is only 4 days older!!) having a wonderful time eating quavers and watching Barney! They're both obsessed with the purple dinosaur and would have sat there all day if we'd let them! :D

Cute picture! It was good to hear from you, Em.

In response to the question you asked on my blog, the shine in my little girl's hair comes from keeping it well moisturized. We only wash with shampoo once or twice a week at most. And when we shampoo, we put conditioner on and leave it for about 10 minutes before rinsing out. Then, while it's still very damp from her bath, I spray on a mixture of one part oil to six parts water that I keep shaken up in a spray bottle.

The oil is any natural oil (not cooking oil, though, although olive oil is fine), like tea tree oil, or oils that contain sage, almond, olive, rosemary or lavender...these are good for the scalp. Don't worry about the hair feeling greasy...black hair and scalps are much drier than white hair and scalps and require more moisture.

Two more tricks: one is a brush with natural boar's bristles rather than synthetic bristles, because it distributes natural oils and smooths the hair. Another is a satin pillowcase or satin nightcap that will help black hairstyles stay in place and doesn't draw moisture from the hair like cotton does.

The twists I put in my Baby's hair are really easy. You can look it up on-line...it's called "two-strand twists." It's a little time-consuming, but really simple to do. It's literally two small strands of hair and you twist them over each other repeatedly, creating what looks like a coiled rope. If the hair is curly enough, it will stay really well on its own without unravelling for several days.

Hope that helps! I love talking hair, so let me know if you want or need any more help.
